You must have attended Rutjaga before at a family wedding, where people gather for whole night to sing songs and do fun. The Karachi Astronomers’ Society’s (KAS) Rutjaga is also similar. We just replace songs with astronomy lectures and fun with stargazing. Rutjaga is the signature and the only kind of event in Pakistan by Karachi Astronomers Society. In Rutjaga, a group of astronomy enthusiasts travel with us to a remote location, far away from cities to witness the beauty of dark sky. Participants get a chance to witness mesmerizing heavenly bodies like planets, nebulas, galaxies etc. They listen to and [...]

2021-01-08T05:09:59+00:00

November 14 presents the moon’s closest encounter with Earth in over 68 years, since January 26, 1948. The full moon on November 14, 2016, will feature the closest full moon (356,509 kilometers) until November 25, 2034 (356,448 kilometers). What is a Supermoon? A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth. The Moon's distance varies each month between approximately 357,000 kilometers (222,000 mi) and 406,000 km (252,000 mi) due to its elliptical orbit around the [...]

Io Transit while Hunting Comets

2021-01-08T11:47:36+00:00

Last night (Nov 15, 2013) I was at KaAstrodome with Mehdi Hussain’s Skywatcher 7″ MCT. Objective was to hunt comets. Started with the testing of GoTo which was expected to be not functioning well. With the help of my Bino (15×70) I pointed laser on the Lovejoy and then Mehdi Hussain centred it in the MCT. We went to sleep before ISON. Oh I forgot. There was also an Io Transit, which was in plans.   Io is the innermost of the four Galilean moons of the planet Jupiter and, with a diameter of 3,642 kilometres (2,263 mi), the fourth-largest moon [...]
