You must have attended Rutjaga before at a family wedding, where people gather for whole night to sing songs and do fun. The Karachi Astronomers’ Society’s (KAS) Rutjaga is also similar. We just replace songs with astronomy lectures and fun with stargazing.

Rutjaga is the signature and the only kind of event in Pakistan by Karachi Astronomers Society. In Rutjaga, a group of astronomy enthusiasts travel with us to a remote location, far away from cities to witness the beauty of dark sky. Participants get a chance to witness mesmerizing heavenly bodies like planets, nebulas, galaxies etc. They listen to and ask questions about the space and beyond from experts.

What’s more is the astronomy discussion which starts after midnight where everyone is free to share their opinion about the curiosity driving their gaze always towards the stars. The most beautiful part starts when few just few hours before dawn you get a chance to just lie down, open your eyes, and realize the vastness, beauty and the arrangement of stars on the night sky. Other than Astronomy, Participants also get to enjoy and explore the sight we select for Rutjaga.

The Highlights of this event are:

  • Sky observation from telescopes.
  • Night sky tour, where you will learn to identify objects in sky.
  • Basic Astrophotography demo where you will learn that how you can start Astro-imaging with a basic DSLR.
  • Lectures about fundamental concepts of Astronomy
  • Sightseeing where you will find views to remember for the rest of your life

Night Sky Tour and Skywatching Tips

A guided tour of the night sky helps you better understand the real theme of Star Gazing, what we call Meaningful Stargazing. Finding prominent shapes in the sky and learning about them. Compare the sky with the one you see from your home.

 

Telescopic Observation & Equipment Discussions

Not just the planets, there are several deep sky objects to observe in the night sky. Observation of Galaxies, Nebulae (or Nebulas), Star Clusters through telescopes. KAS team answers all questions that participants ask about that particular object in the view.

We explain how different telescopes work. What kind of equipment is available. What to look for, when you go for buying one for yourself or your child.

  1. Is this a safe and secure event?
    A. Up till now we haven’t encountered anything dangerous Alhamdulilah.
  2. Does KAS provide tents or sleeping bags?
    A. KAS doesn’t provide sleeping bags or tents. You can bring your own. Because nights are longer and cold in open areas where we go, we suggest you bring at least a blanket. You can rent tents from us. Our event registration form also has a tent booking form.
  3. What are the washroom arrangements?
    A. Washrooms are available there. We will have makeshift toilets
  4. What is the age limit?
    A. Age limit is 8 years to 75 years
  5. From where do we buy a sleeping bag?
    A. You can buy a sleeping bag from place opposite Madni masjid. You can also buy from this seller 0300-3615563 (Iqbal).
