2021-02-13T16:40:11+00:00

Aur keya chaheye.. The Cave City of Pakistan is under one of the darkest skies of the world; around Bortle 1. Imagine, here you are with high-tech telescopes and other astronomical gears.  Now being an astronomer, wouldn't this be in itself a lifetime experience for you. Surely it would be. On top of it, if this very activity is under the guidance and in helping the company of experienced Pakistani amateur astronomers, then participants ko aur keya chaheye (what esle they might want). Bravo, for more than a decade, Karachi Astronomers Society has been promoting Astro-Tourism in Pakistan. Thereby through these [...]

2021-01-08T14:23:53+00:00

The 19th of July 2013 marks an important Astronomy event. The event is named “The Day The Earth Smiled (TDTES)”. AWB is proud to coordinate worldwide astronomy events in celebration of The Day The Earth Smiled (TDTES), in cooperation with its founder, Carolyn Porco. Did the Earth really smiled?   From Astronomy Without Borders official website “The world will be watching on July 19, 2013, as NASA’s Cassini spacecraft snaps Earth's image from the far side of Saturn.  With the brilliant light of the Sun blocked by Saturn itself, the ringed planet will loom large in the foreground with Earth appearing as [...]

KaAS Rutjaga at Gorakh Hills peak – Jan 2011

2021-01-17T18:52:47+00:00

One of our founders of KaAS Mr. Naveed Merchant kept discussing and encouraging us to get to the top of Gorakh Hills and have a star party there. We used to say yes only and agree but didn’t know how we can make it possible going there. You might have heard about Gorakh Hills. You have to pass through Sehwan Sharif, and Dadu and through the unpaved paths on the mountain where only 1 vehicle can pass at a time. Want to know more? About Gorakh Hills From Wikipedia, “It is situated at an elevation of 5,688 ft (1,734 m). in the [...]

Geminids Watch 2010 at Kalri Lake – Observing the Geminids meteor shower from Pakistan

2021-01-17T18:53:02+00:00

2 days before the peak of Geminids Meteor Shower back in December 2010, I was sitting on my seat while programming, I got an email. It was an email in which we planned to go to Kalri Lake, Sind for watching the Geminids meteor Shower. The peak of Geminids Shower is on 13 Dec. Unfortunately, the 13 was Monday and considering the work load at office I dropped the idea of joining the trip. Lucky Day I thought for a moment that this opportunity might not come every year, let’s do it. The KaAS team and Pak Wheels planned the trip [...]

Our Munna’s First Day at School!

2021-01-08T12:47:56+00:00

Our Dr. Akbar delivered us a healthy SkyMAX 180 from Australia a few weeks ago. "This boy is big Masha Allah", we thought about the 5 kg Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope or ‘Munna’, and I set on the mission of finding a good school for it. My search landed me at the Education Bay School (EBS) in DHA VIII, Karachi. The principal kindly gave me an appointment for Saturday 14th April ’12, and I and Irfan bhai went to meet the school’s director, Mr. Salman Mehtab. We were impressed with EBS. The final exams were very near, so that was a bit of a [...]

Discussions, Observation Experiences at the FFO

2021-01-08T12:42:11+00:00

Zain Ahmed of Karachi Astronomers Society called me and a few other members of KaAS this weekend over at the FFO (The Fifth Floor Observatory; the name given to Zain Ahmed’s apartment rooftop). None of the other members could make as they had other priorities. I, however, was craving some astronomy-action so I headed up there! A Night of Intellectual Discussions On 1st of April, we had initially decided to take the Sky-Watcher 100ED Telescope out for observation of Saturn - but it was quite late by the time I reached the FFO, and also both of us had some commitments [...]
