Skywatcher 9mm and 6mm 58 aFOV (UWA) Eyepieces

2021-01-08T11:55:30+00:00

Last night November 10th, I woke up at 3am with the plans to test the new eyepieces Skywatcher 9mm and 6mm 58 degree UWA as well as catching a comet. The session started around 3:30 and ended before morning twilight. DSO Testing – Orion Nebula M42 This was the first target to test the eyepieces. The results were far better than the original EPs shipped with Skywatcher 6″ dob. I compared the Super 10mm EP with 9mm UWA. Although there is a minor difference in magnification but the view was awesome. I then tried the 6mm UWA on the same object [...]

Finally I got the Great Red Spot

2021-01-08T11:42:25+00:00

It is a dream of every Astro-Photographer to capture the GRS once. The great red spot of planet Jupiter. During a night observation on November 2, 2013 my dream came true. The Great Red Spot (GRS) is a persistent anticyclonic storm, 22° south of Jupiter’s equator; Earth observations establish a minimum storm lifetime of, variously, 183 years to possibly 348 years. The GRS rotates anticlockwise, with a period of about six Earth days or 14 Jovian days. Great Red Spot captured by me on Saturday Nov 2, 2013.   The GRS rotates anticlockwise, with a period of about six Earth days [...]

Perseid meteor shower set to put on a great show in August 2013

2021-01-08T05:03:48+00:00

Perseids Meteor Shower Peaks on 11th -13th August 2013 The Perseid meteor shower is a major annual event for sky-watchers and 2013 looks to be a great show. The Perseid meteor shower is one of the best meteor showers of the year. Luckily, the Moon (the source of light at night in the sky), will be set before the midnight, that is before the peak time of shower of meteor shower. That means no Moon to disturb us. Known as the most fantastic and accessible meteor shower of the year, the Perseids are expected to fill the "predawn skies with hundreds of shooting stars" on [...]

The Day The Earth Smiled – Wave At Saturn

2021-01-08T14:23:53+00:00

The 19th of July 2013 marks an important Astronomy event. The event is named “The Day The Earth Smiled (TDTES)”. AWB is proud to coordinate worldwide astronomy events in celebration of The Day The Earth Smiled (TDTES), in cooperation with its founder, Carolyn Porco. Did the Earth really smiled?   From Astronomy Without Borders official website “The world will be watching on July 19, 2013, as NASA’s Cassini spacecraft snaps Earth's image from the far side of Saturn.  With the brilliant light of the Sun blocked by Saturn itself, the ringed planet will loom large in the foreground with Earth appearing as [...]

Find the Asteroids- Or they may find us!!!!!

2021-01-08T12:02:33+00:00

This time it is Central Russia, the Chelyabinsk region, 1500km away from Moscow. The town is home to many factories and a nuclear power plant. On Friday 15th February 2013, it witnessed a fireball streaked through the clear morning sky, followed by loud bangs. The impact on mountains injured many people, as the shockwave blew out windows and rocked buildings. Most of those hurt suffered cuts and bruises and many remained in hospital. This “strange thing” was later declared as part of a large meteoroid partially burned up in the lower atmosphere, resulting in a number of meteorites falling earthwards. Fig. 1 A [...]

By Luck or By Choice- The Future is in Our Hands

2021-01-08T12:00:35+00:00

Our beloved planet, the Earth, is only life sustaining planet in the solar system. However, life on earth has always been under tremendous threats from different natural disasters. These disasters not only emanate from the surface and subsurface of earth but it is well known that the interplanetary space around earth is littered with dust and materials from the creation of the solar system.Among these objects, rocky metallic asteroids and comets, produced during the formation of planets, move with ferocious speed around the Sun. The comets and asteroids move in earth cloud in Kuiper beltand between Jupiter and Mars, respectively. But in [...]

Our Munna’s First Day at School!

2021-01-08T12:47:56+00:00

Our Dr. Akbar delivered us a healthy SkyMAX 180 from Australia a few weeks ago. "This boy is big Masha Allah", we thought about the 5 kg Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope or ‘Munna’, and I set on the mission of finding a good school for it. My search landed me at the Education Bay School (EBS) in DHA VIII, Karachi. The principal kindly gave me an appointment for Saturday 14th April ’12, and I and Irfan bhai went to meet the school’s director, Mr. Salman Mehtab. We were impressed with EBS. The final exams were very near, so that was a bit of a [...]
