Crescent Hunt at the FFO: When the Transparency is Good, the Moon is Game

2021-01-08T04:52:19+00:00

The transparency in Karachi was extra-good since a couple of days, so today's 31 hour old Moon seemed game for a crescent hunt. I asked Ebrahim and Ramiz to come over to the FFO (informal name for my home). Both were very interested, but Ebrahim could not make it due to certain reasons. Ramiz, however, was at my place about 20 minutes before sunset and both of us happily went to the roof. The transparency was indeed very good, with few clouds and a tad bit of haze low on the horizon. Ramiz managed to capture the Sun just before it [...]

Eid-ul-Fitr (Shawwal) 1432 Crescent Moon from Pakistan

2021-01-08T04:40:26+00:00

I have two words for the crescent sighting prospects for Shawwal (Eid-ul-Fitr) 1432AH from Pakistan: very interesting! On 29th August 2011 (28th Ramazan 1432), the Moon sets before the Sun throughout Pakistan. If your western horizon is clear on 30th August 2011 (29th Ramazan 1432), you should be able to easily see the crescent Moon. Here are the various astronomical parameters for Karachi for that date (please ignore the typo - it is 30th August and not 3rd August): I'm really hoping for a clear western horizon on 30th August because the crescent Moon would be next to a beautiful minaret [...]

Crescents of Ramazan and the Eids from Pakistan

2021-01-08T11:39:02+00:00

It was March 1989 when my younger brother Zaki was born. Fifteen days later we had Ramazan in Pakistan. 20.4 hours old crescent (Ramazan 1409AH / April 6th 1989) by Howard Cowen from Gainesville, FL. The dark streak just beneath the Moon is an airplane contrail. Nostalgic, eh? Perhaps this shot makes you think: "Boy, those were the days; the lunar crescents of Ramazan and the Eids used to be so thin in Pakistan and the hunt for them so exciting ..." Fast forward twenty years to 2009. The Eid crescent looked like this: Shawwal 1430AH crescent from Khuzdar, Balochistan, on [...]

Total Lunar Eclipse of 15th June 2011 from Pakistan

2021-01-08T04:36:51+00:00

The second lunar eclipse of 1432AH and the first of 2011 will be the darkest eclipse in 22 years. If you have never seen the summer Milky Way at its prime, you now have two very strong excuses for travelling to a dark sky site to observe this total lunar eclipse and the galactic center high in the sky.   The summer Milky Way (unprocessed shot by Hanif Bhatti from Hingol, Balochistan) What the Moon normally does to the Milky Way (Shot by Zagham Islam from Baltistan, Pakistan) The eclipse occurs on 15th/16th June when the Moon is at the ascending node in southern Ophiuchus, [...]

Discussions, Observation Experiences at the FFO

2021-01-08T12:42:11+00:00

Zain Ahmed of Karachi Astronomers Society called me and a few other members of KaAS this weekend over at the FFO (The Fifth Floor Observatory; the name given to Zain Ahmed’s apartment rooftop). None of the other members could make as they had other priorities. I, however, was craving some astronomy-action so I headed up there! A Night of Intellectual Discussions On 1st of April, we had initially decided to take the Sky-Watcher 100ED Telescope out for observation of Saturn - but it was quite late by the time I reached the FFO, and also both of us had some commitments [...]

Geminid Shower at Kalri Lake

2021-01-08T11:37:05+00:00

Meteor observation, for KaAS, had a long time coming. This interesting astronomy pursuit doesn't require equipment and is an ideal activity for the learning amateur astronomer. In KaAS, our set up is ideally suited for a serious shower observation. The sequence includes preparation, observation of the shower, collection of shower count and lastly reduction of the meteor observation data. International Meteor Organization, IMO has it all explained in their website. Its a satisfying activity; knowing that your observation has positively contributed to astronomy on international level. So was it planned, the 9th Rutjuga, at Kalri Lake which had been the site of two [...]

Public Outreach by KaAS at Shaheen Complex

2021-01-08T12:34:57+00:00

Dr Wali Mughni, CEO Ensign Communique, asked for a presentation on astronomy and a practical observation on "tonight's sky" for his about 100 strong Call Center employees for the evening of Friday, 7th January 2011. The notice was short and KaAS was busy planning its next camp at Gorakh Hill. So a quick preparation was made and a public outreach activity was planned. A brief talk on Astronomy and its history and a sky show atop the Shaheen Complex was conducted with 8" Meade telescope by Khalid Marwat President KaAS. First was the observation. Karachi's light pollution didn't dampen the enthusiasm [...]

Sights of Unpolluted Nights

2021-01-15T05:21:16+00:00

(This is an updated version of an article of mine that was published in a youth magazine in June 2011. You can read the original article here.)   [85:1] I swear by the mansions of the stars. The unpolluted night sky is one of the most wondrous things that the mortal eye can conceive. No fancy equipment is needed. Just the urge to gaze skywards on a clear, cloudless night is your ticket to enjoying the captivating show of earthly and celestial lights. In the following we sample some of the open secrets of the night sky. 1.            The Milky Way As [...]

KaAS Visits ISPA

2021-01-08T12:35:23+00:00

KaAS team had an honor of visitingKarachi University’s Department of Planetary Astrophysics (ISPA) on Friday, November 12, 2010 in result of Abbas’ devotedefforts. This effort was specially put in to bring KaAS tothe recognization at Government level by introducing it to Karachi University. Let me tell you that ISPA has a Carl Ziess 6” reflector – a German gem of a telescope that was donated to Karachi University in early days. Unfortunately, as everything else, this was alsobadly neglected by the authorities. If it were not some energatic and devoted students – who are keeping it alive – it would have [...]

Winter Skies

2021-01-08T11:35:31+00:00

I almost forget about Astronomy in summer. Summer constellations are totally strangers for me. But as fall gets closer to winter, I start feeling at home when I look at the sky. Even though this is absolutely a matter of personal liking, I do feel that Winter Skies are much more attractive than Summer Skies. There are more well-defined constellations in winter than summer. Orion, Taurus, Auriga, Gemini, Leo, Cassiopeia etc. A very good, informative link about winter skies is here. Moreover, this winter (2010), we have some regular visitors from the Solar System. Among these, Jupiter is the most attractive with [...]
